Smoky Mountain High-Elevation Retreat Packing Tips

Preparing for a trip to the Smokies is a bit different than your average vacation. Whether you are heading to the sprawling 5-acre estate of Summerfall Chalet or the intimate, tree-lined heights of Firefly Vista, elevation changes everything.

From unpredictable ridge-top weather to the specific needs of a Gatlinburg cabin with mountain views, this guide ensures you arrive prepared for every adventure—from the hiking trails to the hot tub.

1. The “Must-Haves” for Mountain Driving

Both of our properties offer incredible privacy and elevation, which means the drives are scenic and, at times, steep.

  • The Right Vehicle: If you are visiting during the winter months, 4×4 or AWD is required. Even in the shoulder seasons, a vehicle with good tires and a bit of clearance makes the climb to Firefly Vista or the forest driveway of Summerfall much smoother.

  • Offline Maps: While we provide high-speed Starlink at Summerfall and Xfinity at Firefly, GPS signal can be spotty while driving through the national park. Download your offline maps on Google Maps before you leave home!

2. Layers, Layers, and More Layers

Temperatures in downtown Gatlinburg can be 10–15 degrees warmer than at the summit of a hiking trail or even on your cabin’s deck.

  • The “Three-Layer” Rule: Pack a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating fleece or sweater, and a waterproof outer shell.

  • Footwear: Even if you aren’t a hardcore hiker, bring sturdy shoes with good grip. The natural terrain around Summerfall’s 5-acre ridge is perfect for exploring, but flip-flops won’t cut it.

3. Cabin Essentials: What to Leave at Home (and What to Bring)

We strive to make our cabins a “home away from home,” but there are a few specifics to keep in mind:

  • Hair Dryers: Please note that we do not supply hair dryers at either Summerfall Chalet or Firefly Vista. Be sure to tuck yours into your suitcase!

  • Coffee Supplies: We provide coffee makers (including a percolator at Firefly Vista), but you’ll want to bring your favorite local beans or grounds to enjoy with that morning view.

  • EV Charging: Staying at Summerfall? Don’t forget your J1772 connection cable to take advantage of the Level 2 Electric Car Charger on-site.

4. Gear for the “Extra” Amenities

Our cabins aren’t just places to sleep; they are destinations. Pack accordingly:

  • Swimwear: You can’t stay at a Gatlinburg cabin with a hot tub without a swimsuit! Whether it’s the massive 9-person spa at Summerfall or the cozy 4-person tub at Firefly, you’ll be spending a lot of time in the water.

  • S’mores Kits: Both properties feature outdoor fire pits. Bring marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate for a classic Smoky Mountain evening under the stars.

  • Tournament Prep: If you’re staying at the Rocky Top Sports World cabin (Summerfall Chalet), remember to pack extra laundry pods. We have a full laundry room on-site, perfect for keeping those uniforms fresh between games.

5. Tech & Connectivity

  • Chargers: With 75″ 4K HDTVs and arcade machines, your entertainment is covered, but don’t forget long charging cables for your personal devices.

  • Carrier Check: Verizon works well at Summerfall, but other carriers may be spotty due to the private ridge location. Rest assured, our Guest WiFi will keep you connected to the outside world.
