04 May Park Smart: Your Guide to Smoky Mountain Parking Tags & Fees
Planning a getaway to the Smokies? Whether you’re cheering on your athlete at Rocky Top Sports World while staying at Summerfall Chalet or escaping for a quiet weekend at Firefly Vista, there’s one small detail that will make your trip much smoother: the “Park It Forward” program.
To keep our trails beautiful and our facilities clean, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) requires a parking tag for any vehicle stopping for more than 15 minutes. Here is everything you need to know to stay compliant and stress-free.
1. How Much Does it Cost?
The National Park Service has kept the pricing straightforward. The tag you need depends on the length of your stay:
-
Daily Tag: $5 (Valid until 11:59 PM on the date of purchase)
-
Weekly Tag: $15 (Valid for 7 consecutive days)
-
Annual Tag: $40 (Valid for a full 12 months from the month of purchase)
Pro Tip: If you are staying at Summerfall Chalet for a week-long sports tournament, the $15 weekly tag is your best value!
2. Where Can I Buy Them?
You have three easy ways to grab your tag:
-
Online (Recommended): Purchase daily or weekly tags via Recreation.gov. Important: You must print these out before you arrive; digital copies on your phone are not accepted.
-
In-Person: Visit the Sugarlands Visitor Center (just minutes from our cabins) or the Gatlinburg Welcome Center.
-
Automated Kiosks: There are 24/7 credit-card kiosks located throughout the park at popular spots like Newfound Gap and Metcalf Bottoms.
3. Key Rules to Remember
-
License Plate Specific: Tags are tied to your specific vehicle and license plate. They are non-transferable.
-
Display: Place your daily/weekly tag face-up on the front passenger-side dashboard. Annual tags should be decaled to the front lower passenger-side windshield.
-
Exemptions: If you have a valid handicap license plate or placard, you do not need a parking tag. Also, motorists driving through the park without stopping (or stopping for less than 15 minutes) are exempt.
4. Why the Fee?
The best part? 100% of the funds stay right here in the Great Smoky Mountains. This money goes directly toward trail maintenance, trash removal, and improving visitor safety. By “Parking It Forward,” you’re helping ensure that the views from the Firefly Vista deck remain pristine for years to come.
Make the Most of Your Stay
Staying at one of our cabins puts you in the heart of the action. Summerfall Chalet is the ultimate Rocky Top Sports World cabin, offering plenty of room for the whole team (and an extra-large hot tub for post-game recovery!). Meanwhile, Firefly Vista offers that quintessential Gatlinburg cabin with mountain views and a cozy vibe for romantic evenings.
